Owner: Dave Holmes
Dodge Coronet Lancer
This beautiful car has kind of a sad story behind it. It was owned by a man whom many may know named Joe Martinez. Joe, his friend Charlie and I became friends over time at the many shows we all attended. My wife and I always loved “The Jewel,” as Joe nicknamed this '59 two-door hardtop.
Joe was a Vietnam Vet, and unfortunately had contracted a life-threatening blood disease from his exposure to Agent Orange while serving overseas. Over time, the illness took its toll, and Joe passed away. His family knew how much the car meant to me, so they offered me a chance to get it, which of course, I did.
Joe told me he got the car from a friend of his in Albuquerque. In fact, he said the car was purchased in Albuquerque and has always been a New Mexico car. It still has the Wayne Lovelady dealer's name on the trunk. Joe painted it blackberry and put American racing wheels on it. He also re-did the interior.
The Jewel is a flat-head six-cylinder with a three-speed manual transmission. This was how the car was originally sold.
I'm going to keep the car the way Joe had it in honor of his memory.
