Doug and Debbie Doonan – 1974 AMC Javelin
My wife Debbie and I bought our car about two years ago from an E-bay ad. The car was shipped from Boise Idaho to Albuquerque where we took possession of it. Our immediate reaction upon seeing our car for the first time was “what have we gotten ourselves into”. We decided that the car was too far gone to restore back to original, so we elected to make the car go fast instead of look pretty. We took out the original 304 engine and replaced it with a rebuilt 401.
The 727 Torque Flight transmission was rebuilt with a shift kit added. The rear end was redone with new 373 gears, posi trac and new Moser axles. Debbie and I are not the best mechanics around so we leaned on Fred and Phil Jaramillo of Bosque Tire and Auto to bail us out when we got too far over our heads with the transmission and rear end. Future plans for the car include some new seats, a roll bar and some real “sticky tires”!!! We also have another AMC that will be a complete restoration project in the future, a 1970 AMC AMX. This car will be about looking pretty. We hope to have it entered in some of the car shows in the not too distant future.
Thanks everyone for making us feel welcome. Without you guys we would have no place to belong.
